Q.
It is written in Luke 2:35, “…and you yourself shall be pierced with a sword –
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare.” Can you explain how the
thoughts of many will be laid bare? Also, how do I explain the Blessed Mother’s
role in “the economy of salvation”? What is the economy of salvation? – M.C.,

Regarding the first question, it would help to quote the previous part of
Simeon’s statement when He took the Christ Child in his arms: “This Child is
destined to be the downfall and rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be
opposed – and you yourself shall be pierced with a sword – so that the thoughts
of many hearts may be laid bare.”
This
would appear to mean that exposure to Jesus and His teachings will cause many
people to choose sides, to show by words and actions the thoughts contained
within their hearts. Spiritual downfall will come to those who reject Jesus,
while those who choose to follow Him will rise spiritually in the sight of God.
According
to the Catechism, the economy of
salvation “refers to God’s activity in creating and governing the world,
particularly with regard to His plan for the salvation of the world in the
person and work of Jesus Christ, a plan which is being accomplished through His
Body, the Church, in its life and sacraments” (Glossary, p. 876).
St.
Paul alluded to this divine economy when he said: “To me, the least of all
believers, was given the grace to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable
riches of Christ and to enlighten all men on the mysterious design which for
ages was hidden in God, the Creator of all. Now, therefore, through the Church,
God’s manifold wisdom is made known to the principalities and powers of Heaven,
in accord with His age-old purpose, carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord”
(Ephesians 3:8:11).
As
the woman whose “yes” made it possible for Jesus to enter the world as a man
and to effect our redemption, Mary played a key role in the economy of
salvation.
